![]() ![]() Hence, attenuators are often designated by the decibel (dB) drop the attenuator provides. The basic passive attenuator acts as a resistive element that reduces the incident signal by a certain amount of signal energy. RF Attenuators can be passive or active devices with variable attenuators depending on the design. RF limiters are typically connectorized with coaxial or waveguide interfaces, though there are surface mount RF limiters. Hence, a greater incident signal energy will result in higher RF limiter attenuation and a proportionally reduced output signal. In this implementation the resistance, or attenuation value of the RF limiter is a function of the incident signal power. PIN diodes are commonly used to implement RF limiters as incident-power controlled, variable resistors. This is the case in portions of the signal chain, such as the input ports of a mixer or gain block amplifier. ![]() RF limiters may be used anywhere in a signal chain that may experience unintended or unavoidable high signal energy that could damage components or result in undesirable operation. For instance, a low-noise amplifier (LNA) is often a sensitive device where incident power beyond a certain threshold may result in derating or damage to the LNA. It is common to use RF limiters to protect sensitive receivers and signal conditioning circuitry from high incoming signals that would otherwise desensitize the receiver or damage the signal conditioning components. RF limiters are devices that reduce an incoming signal if it’s power level exceeds a threshold of the limiter. These components are often used to protect sensitive RF components and devices. There are also a wide range of RF limiters and attenuators that also operate various ways that may be advantageous for some systems and not others. However, they do so in different ways that are key to understanding their use. Topic: Avoiding RF Isolators - Reflectionless Filtering Components for Emerging Wireless SystemsBoth RF limiters and Attenuators reduce the power of an RF signal. Experimental results of several proof-of-concept demonstrators in a variety of technologies will be also presented. This includes both mono-functional and multi-functional RF devices in which several RF-analog-signal-processing actions are co-integrated together. After introducing the problems of RF power reflections in RF front-end chains and classic solutions to circumvent them with their limitations, the main strategies for the design of reflectionless RF passive components as new paradigm will be described. The purpose of this webinar is to familiarize the audience with the emerging topic of reflectionless/absorptive RF passive components, which may result in considerabe benefits for emerging RF front-end chains of new wireless systems (e.g., 5G and beyond) in terms of energy-efficiency/DC-power-saving, overall size/volume, and cost. A more-efficient solution that is recently gaining considerable research attention may be the exploitation of “reflectionless” RF passive devices, where the out-of-band signal energy is dissipated inside the circuit instead of being reflected back to the source so that RF isolators are no longer needed. ![]() Whereas passive and active RF isolators avoid this problem, this is done at the expense of higher size/volume and increased DC power consumption, respectively, and higher cost. Indeed, such RF signal-power reflections may induce RF amplifiers to operate in the non-linear regime or to create additional undesired mixing products in frequency-conversion stages. RF isolators are usually employed in RF front-end chains to prevent active stages to be damaged by the presence of RF signal-power reflections created by the passive stages (e.g., RF bandpass filters) in their stopband regions. ![]() View past and registration opens two weeks prior to presentation. ![]()

Maybe we just need to open our minds a bit more and think of the unusual. If Safari keeps freezing, wait for a few minutes to allow it to unfreeze. I've learnt a lot from this experience … frustration, despair and finally peace … something that all our patients experience when we don't look beyond the bigger picture. The bed has been given the all clear but fear has already planted its seed! ![]() ![]() Two weeks on, I'm still sleeping in the spare room. Within 24 hours my rash subsided and vanished. The diagnosis I had been waiting for months came so matter of-fact from a man who had never seen the dregs of a boring medical textbook. He looked at my rash and said, ‘Oh, looks like they've been at you as well - surprised they didn't bite your partner.’ And there it was. So much for the reputable company that I shall not be mentioning, but wish I could! What? Looks like the eggs of the bugs had been dormant in my lovely bed over the winter and had then hatched over the summer. Natsy little beggars … Probably came from the bed that wasn't treated at the warehouse …’ Pest control came over the next day (lovely chap) who sprayed the whole room with pesticide: I was traumatised and petrified and proceeded to put bleach on everything. They were everywhere, all over the wooden slats and frame of the bed. The conversation was cutting edge and consisted of my rash intermingled with a few slurps of wine!Īs I finally turned in for bed, I went upstairs to change the bed sheets and as I moved the mattress, I noticed them. It was a late evening in September and I had invited some friends round for dinner, all of whom were potential GPs. I went to see my GP again who also ordered blood tests and said if they came back abnormal, he would consider referring me to an immunologist. At that time we were all betting on chronic urticaria. I spoke to my father (a paediatrician) who got really worried and ordered me to do a string of blood tests, half of which I didn't even know existed! My registrar and another dermatology registrar suggested various things, treatments, referrals but no specific diagnosis. Well, by then I was starting to lose my wits and made a barrage of phone calls. I convinced him to give me a course of steroids while I was abroad, which worked a treat, but as soon as I got back from the US, the rash reappeared. He thought it was an urticarial rash and told me to change my washing powder, go organic and generally try to find what was I reacting to. I was adamant that I would enjoy my time in the US so went to my local GP who agreed. It got to July and I was planning a holiday abroad. I wasn't sleeping at night because of the itching and started to miss work because the rash was so severe. I am an atopic person so just assumed I had come in contact with some bizarre nettle found in the depths of beyond in Cornwall! I proceeded to take a cocktail of antihistamines, topical creams etc, but things didn't get better. Within a day of returning, I started developing a very itchy urticarial rash all over my body. It all started in May 2005 after I came back from a camping trip with my partner and his cousin. It's something I've certainly learnt from the following experience. The number of strange presenting complaints we encounter every day in our practice surely must have given us the insight to look beyond the tunnel vision we have. Why after 5 years (or 6 in my case!) of medical school and eons in hospital/GP medicine do we still not learn to look beyond the obvious? ![]() ![]() ![]() However when the radio receiver has a fixed frequency first local oscillator this is not easy to ensure as it will sweep over a band of frequencies. Normally intermediate frequencies are chosen so that there are likely to be no very large signals present which might cause problems. IF BreakthroughĪnother problem which can occur with a superhet occurs when signals from the antenna break through the RF sections of the set and directly enter the IF stages of the radio receiver. Typically it falls with increasing frequency because the percentage frequency difference between the wanted and image signals is smaller. This is because the level of rejection will vary according to the frequency in use. The frequency at which the measurement is made also has to be included. it would be 1/1000 lower in terms of voltage or 1/1000000 lower in terms of power. This means that if signals of the same strength were present on the wanted frequency and the image frequency, then the image signal would be 60 dB lower than the wanted one, i.e. The image rejection of a receiver will be specified as the ratio between the wanted and image signals expressed in decibels (dB)at a certain operating frequency. The specification compares the levels of signals of equal strength on the wanted and image frequencies, quoting the level of rejection of the unwanted signal. It is clearly important to specify the level of image rejection. ![]() In view of this it is very important to reduce the image response to acceptable levels, particularly for exacting radio communications applications. When they interfere heterodyne notes will be heard and as the receiver is tuned, the pitch of the signals will change. ![]() In addition to this the image signals will "tune" in the opposite direction to the wanted ones. This means that unwanted signals are received along with the wanted ones and this means that the levels of interference will be higher than those with a high level of image rejection. When a radio receiver has a poor level image rejection signals which should not be received as they are on the image will pass through the IF stages along with the required ones. In view of this, radio receivers to be used in high performance radio communications applications need to have a good image rejection performance. Superheterodyne receiver image is twice the IF away from the wanted signal Effect of poor image rejectionĪ receiver with a poor level of image rejection will suffer from much higher levels of interference than one with a high level of image rejection. In other words with an IF at 1 MHz, the image will be 2 MHz away from the wanted frequency. These will be separated from the wanted channel by a frequency equal to twice the IF. It does not need to reject signals on adjacent channels, but instead it needs to reject signals on the image frequency. It is clearly unacceptable to receive signals on two frequencies at the same time and it is possible to remove the unwanted one by the addition of a tuned circuit prior to the mixer RF tuned circuit removes image in a superheterodyne receiverįortunately this tuned circuit does not need to be excessively sharp. However if a signal at 4 MHz is also able to produce an output at 1 MHz. For example with the local oscillator set to 5 MHz and with an IF of 1 MHz it can be seen that a signal at 6 MHz mixes with the local oscillator to produce a signal at 1 MHz that will pass through the IF filter. The basic concept of the superhet radio means that it is possible for two signals to enter the intermediate frequency, IF, amplifier. Read more about the Superheterodyne Radio. By using a variable frequency local oscillator, a fixed frequency intermediate frequency filter can be used. In this way the signals can be converted in frequency to an intermediate frequency where they can be filtered. The superheterodyne radio uses a technique where incoming signals are mixed or multiplied with the signal from an internally generated local oscillator. ![]() ![]() ![]() It is necessary to emphasize that this is not the world of long haul communication or Wide Area Networks-the world usually associated with long distance telephone dial-up circuits, leased lines, ISDN, packet switching, ATM or frame relay. This is the world of what is commonly called short haul, limited distance or local area data communication. The distances involved may vary from several inches to several thousands of feet. An example of this environment, the small office building, is shown in Figure 1. Premises data communications deals with data communications in the office building, factory, manufacturing plant site or campus. It is best to begin by describing the setting for the communications problems of interest. This book is written for the "hands on" user of data communication equipment, not the experienced design engineer. This book is a "Physician’s Desk Reference" not a "Gray’s Anatomy." Furthermore, we assume that our audience may or may not have a technical background in data communications. Either something needs to be fixed, expanded or protected. It has problems which need to be dealt with. The approach is very "results oriented." The view taken is not that of the academic network architect who has the opportunity and freedom of designing and specifying everything in advance by "starting with a blank page." Rather, for the most part, it is from the perspective of the person who has a premises data communications capability and for some reason or other is unhappy with it. In this book we will explore its many facets, expose the various problems encountered in this area of interest and illustrate the way that these problems can be solved. ![]() ![]() Meanwhile, birds, beavers, mice, and bears started returning to those once-barren areas. Plants started growing on the riverbanks and erosion decreased, causing rivers and streams to actually change course. ![]() Deer and elk started avoiding areas where they could be easily hunted, such as open valleys and gorges, which caused those areas to regenerate. Scientists think this happened, at least in part, because wolves started to change their prey’s behavior. In 1995, Yellowstone was home to about 18,000 elk, but by 2015, that number had dropped to 4,500, helping restore the ecosystem’s natural balance. The first thing that happened was the number of large prey dropped. So their numbers grew.īefore long, the wolves started changing Yellowstone’s ecosystem all over again, but this time for the better. And because they were inside the national park, the animals were protected from hunters. The newly formed packs spread out and established their territories, and the large populations of elk and deer provided them with ample prey. Then they were released into the wilderness of the park. Once there, each was radio-collared and temporarily penned so biologists could make sure they were healthy. They simply had fewer places to hide from predators.Įverything started to change after scientists reintroduced 41 wolves into Yellowstone National Park.įrom 1995 to 1997, wolves were captured in Canada and northwest Montana and transported to Yellowstone. The numbers of rabbits and mice species fell, too, because of all the overgrazing. Willow and aspen trees started dying off - and that hurt the species that relied on these trees for their survival, such as the birds that use them as nesting grounds and the beavers that use the wood to build dams and survive the winter. This hurt plants and other animal species. Their numbers grew so much that they ended up overgrazing large areas of land, leaving them vulnerable to erosion and defoliation. Why? Because without one of their major natural predators, fewer elk were dying. And biodiversity across the entire park declined as a result. Without wolves, there was a lot of one thing: elk. “Having a lot of different kinds of things at moderate numbers is better than having a lot of any one thing.” “Most ecosystems are best when they’re balanced,” Doug Smith, project leader for the Wolf Restoration Project in Yellowstone, said in a National Park Service Q&A. In other words, the whole ecosystem became unbalanced. When wolves were eliminated, it caused what scientists call a top-down trophic cascade. Wolves are apex predators, which means they are at the top of the food web. When Yellowstone lost its wolves, it caused some big problems for the whole ecosystem. In the end, not a single breeding pair of wolves remained in Yellowstone National Park. So, starting in the late 1800s up until the 1920s, wolves were hunted and poisoned by ranchers and predator control programs in order to protect people, livestock, and other “ more desirable ” wildlife species. The fact that wolves started killing livestock didn’t help either. That is because ever since settlers moved west, they feared the great gray wolf. In fact, it was hard to see a gray wolf anywhere in the lower 48 states. In fact, today, the chances of seeing a wolf in some parts of this park - such as Lamar Valley - are so good that some people come just to wolf-watch.īut for most of the 20th century, it was impossible to view these animals at all inside the park. They might even get to spot one of these beautiful animals darting across the landscape. On a quiet hike in Yellowstone National Park, some lucky visitors might get to hear an amazing sound: the howl of a gray wolf.
